Weight Loss Q & A

Am I overweight?

You’re considered overweight if your body mass index (BMI) is 25 or greater. While there are BMI calculators online, you can also calculate it yourself. To determine your BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703. Then divide that number by your height in inches and divide by your height one more time. This method may not work well if you’re very muscular, however. A thorough exam and consultation with the doctors at Dr. DeLeon’s Woman’s Health Care can help you determine if it’s best for your overall health and longevity for you to lose weight.

What are the benefits of weight loss?

If you’re overweight or obese, losing just 5-10% of your body weight can produce health benefits, such as:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduced blood cholesterol
  • Lower blood sugar
  • More energy
  • A reduced risk of diabetes and cancer
  • A lower risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Less depression
  • Improved self-esteem

Dropping weight can be difficult without medical intervention, which is why the OB/GYN team at Dr. DeLeon's Woman's Health Care is committed to helping you every step of the way.

How can I lose excess weight?

Dr. Usuga offers the following weight loss treatments to help you reach your goal weight:

Dietary consultation

During a dietary consultation, your provider reviews your medical history and asks about your usual food intake, exercise routine, and additional lifestyle habits. He may order lab tests to check for nutritional deficiencies or hormone imbalances.

Nutrition plans

After reviewing your usual food intake and weight loss calorie requirements, your doctor creates a custom nutrition plan just for you. You’ll know exactly what to eat and when, and may consume medical nutrition shakes as meal replacements.

Injections

Weight loss injections work by stimulating hormones that increase satiety, or a feeling fullness. With less of an appetite, it’s easier to eat fewer calories for effective weight loss.

Weight loss pills

Your doctor might prescribe weight loss pills that reduce your appetite, increase your body’s metabolism, or reduce fat absorption.

Lifestyle changes

Dr. Usuga counsels you about lifestyle changes you can make at home to increase your chance of weight loss success. Examples include:

  • Fill half of each plate with vegetables
  • Avoid refined carbohydrates
  • Sleep at least 7-9 hours each night
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes a day
  • Give up alcohol and sugary drinks
  • Drink lots of water
  • Reduce stress
  • Try relaxation techniques
